“Week of Women in Sustainable Development” Commences on March 12

The second annual Gro Brundtland Week of Women in Sustainable Development will take place this March 12–17.

Inspired to facilitate interaction among women scientists, especially in the fields of public health and sustainable development, Gro Harlem Brundtland designated half of her Tang Prize Grant to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) for the establishment of the event.

This year, five young female scientists (pictured above) will arrive in Taiwan for the week-long event, in which they will take part in discussion with female leaders in the field of public health.

On this list of leaders invited to speak is Regina Benjamin, former US Surgeon General, who will deliver a talk titled "Making a Difference." Fumiko Kasuga from Future Earth, Su-May Yu from Academia Sinica, and Kuo-Fong Ma from National Central University will also deliver talks on topics ranging from food production to earthquake disaster management.

Tang Prize Laureates Lead Revolution in Genetic Editing

The 2017 Tang Prize Lecture at Experimental Biology will be held on Sunday April 23, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, in Chicago, Illinois. Emmanuelle Charpentier, one of the developers of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing platform and Tang Prize laureate in Biopharmaceutical Science for 2016, will deliver her talk on "The bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 system: a game changer in genome engineering."

Charpentier, a French microbiologist, is well recognized as a world-leading expert in regulatory mechanisms underlying processes of infection and immunity in bacterial pathogens. She was awarded the Tang Prize jointly with Feng Zhang from MIT and her long-time colleague Jennifer Doudna from Berkeley. Her own role in CRISPR's development is the discovery that Cas9's activity requires trans-activating crRNA (tracrRNA).

Visit the Experimental Biology website (linked) for information on the venue and date.

Remembering a Visionary Figure in Energy

White roofing, appliance energy standards, building analysis programs and construction policies—in his over 40 years of work in energy, Arthur Rosenfeld has given the world a number of practical ways to use energy in smarter, more efficient ways.

Energy standards and technologies under Rosenfeld's auspices have kept per-capita energy use in California flat over the past 35-plus years, even while energy for the US overall has continued to climb.

"Art," as he is belovedly known among colleagues and students, passed away on January 27, 2017, at the age of 90.

The Tang Prize Foundation hereby remembers the life and legacy of Art Rosenfeld, a visionary in sustainable development.

This year, 2017, the Tang Prize will bring the Innovation in High Schools Competition back to campuses. The event will provide students with a platform where they can bring their bright young minds together to brainstorm plans directed at the four prize fields—Sustainable Development, Biopharmaceutical Science, Sinology, and Rule of Law.

Registration is open from today until May 31.
