Breakthrough: This is what a hero looks like
A creative mind with a bit of madness and stubbornness, this is the James P. Allison people know. In 2014 and 2018, he and Professor Tasusku Honjo were jointly awarded the Tang Prize and the Nobel Prize respectively, for their great contributions to cancer immunotherapy.
Early this month, Breakthrough, a documentary that tells a compelling story about Allison’s professional and personal journey over several decades, was premiered in the States to critical acclaim. Present at the premier, Allison told the audience that his research career “was 15 years-plus of being frustrated.” But “luckily, there were a lot of people who worked with me and kept the lights on.” He also pointed out that the story of immunotherapy is not concluded yet, emphasizing that scientists are still working hard to “figure out how to bring it to everybody.”
