Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) Tang Prize Foundation CEO Chern Jenn-chuan (陳振川) visited Columbia University on Thursday to discuss with a prized pupil of renowned Sinologist William Theodore de Bary how to promote the study of sinology among Taiwanese youth.
Chern met with Rachel E. Chung (鄭義靜), associate director of the University Committee on Asia ＆ the Middle East, to talk about de Bary's legacy in the field, which both want to preserve and pass on to future generations of students.
According to Chung, Columbia's Department of East Asian Language & Cultures has chosen Mingdao High School in Taichung as the venue for a college-high school student forum related to sinology next summer.
Students at Mingdao High School will get to engage with students from Columbia's Department of East Asian Language & Cultures to talk about all things East Asia, including of course sinology, the study of China through its language, literature, history and culture.
This summer, a similar forum was hosted at Taipei Wego Private Senior High School for the same purpose.
De Bary, who passed away this July, also left a collection of over 7,000 books of original source material at Columbia, portions of which will be gifted to the Tang Prize Foundation and Academia Sinica to promote academic endeavours in sinology.
