ASIL/ILA Members Commend Tang Prize as Positive Influence to Today's Youth

ASIL President Lori Damrosch of Columbia Law School: "Albie's selection as the first laureate in Rule of Law is a perfect choice…. The international law community across the board recognize his role as a protector of the rule of law and as an opponent of unjust, undignified systems of government." On May 27 Prof. Damrosch and many of the leadership of the ASIL and ILA from branches all over the world visited the Tang Prize Foundation to discuss the Tang Prize, the Rule of Law category, and its first laureate, Albie Sachs.

ILA Bangladesh-branch President Dr. Kamal Hossain saw the positivity in the prize, saying, "the recipients of the prize may be able to have positive influence over the younger generation…. Albie, who sacrificed much to help the victims of racial injustice in South Africa, is a perfect example of the kind role model needed in today's world." Hossain stressed that if the world is to become one in which tolerance and mutual respect are constants, then we must look to people like Albie to act as an example to our youth.

Tang Prize Laureate in Rule of Law Albie Sachs Inspires Young and Old Alike

I'm not worried about what other people will say. I'm not scared of their opinions if I know those opinions are wrong. But I'm willing to listen to their opinions, they might be right. -Former Justice on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Albie Sachs

The fighter for human rights Albie Sachs arrived in Taiwan in April and May for a week of events throughout the Taipei area. In his May 1 visit to Jianguo High School, Albie spoke with students from nine Taipei-area high schools about his experiences as a freedom fighter. The next day, Albie shared the stage with author Xu Fang-ju at the release of the new Tang Prize Book Determined to Change. Earlier in the week, he participated in events at National Central University and Tsing Hua University, where the film on his life Soft Vengeance was shown for the first time in Asia to an eager audience. Albie's trip also included his participation as witness in a court simulation and much interaction with all walks of life in Taiwan, including the youth and the legal profession. It was a week that no one in Taiwan will soon forget.
