EB 2021 Goes Virtual and Tang Prize Lecture Goes Ahead Amid the Pandemic

Headlines

Foreword

One of the world’s largest biomedical congregations, the Experimental Biology annual meeting, will take place on April 27, 2021. This year’s Tang Prize Lecture, titled “Tyrosine Phosphorylation—From Discovery to Drug Development and Beyond,” will be delivered by the 2018 laureate in Biopharmaceutical Science, Dr. Tony Hunter.

Originally slated for March 2020, the lecture was put on hold because of the pandemic, and will be broadcast online this year, available to EB members who register for this conference. To prepare you for Dr. Hunter’s lecture, we included in this newsletter an article published on the New Vision magazine looking at the revolutionary impact of targeted therapy and discussing how it has greatly improved the wellbeing of humanity.

Tang Prize laureates’ engagement in international activities didn’t come to a halt during this global crisis. Madame Justice Louise Arbour, who won the 2016 Tang Prize in Rule of Law, will be awarded the Goler T. Butcher Medal at the annual conference of the American Society of International Law, held online from March 24 to 26. She will join the event remotely to have a conversation with another panelist.

Since the pandemic broke out, Taiwan has been able to contain the virus successfully, with just over one thousand infections and only ten deaths recorded so far. On top of that, vaccine rollouts have begun in many countries. As a result, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control decided that as of March 1, quarantine measures for business travelers from low- and medium-risk countries would be eased. We therefore have reason to look forward to the return of a more normal life in the second half of this year, and the return of face-to-face interactions with our laureates.
