Taipei, March 2 (CNA) The five recipients of this year's Gro Brundtland Award will visit Taiwan in March to attend a week-long event on sustainable development and public health and interact with local scientists, the Tang Prize Foundation said Thursday.
The five winners are Fathiah Zakham, an assistant researcher in Hodeidah University in Yemen; Farah Fathima, an assistant professor in India's St. John's Medical College; Phyllis Awor, a post doctoral fellow in Uganda's Makerere University; Wafa Al-Jamal, a prostate cancer research fellow in the UK's University of East Anglia; and Yen Yi-chun, a research fellow in Singapore's Duke-NUS Medical School.
The second Gro Brundtland Week of Women in Sustainable Development will take place from March 12-17 in Tainan, Taichung, Hualien and Taipei and will include lectures and discussions on such topics as women's and children's health, disease and environmental sustainability.
Among the speakers at the event are Regina Benjamin, former US Surgeon General, and Fumiko Kasuga, global hub director at Future Earth, a research initiative on global environmental change and sustainability.
Brundtland, the winner of the first Tang Prize in sustainable development who is often called the "godmother of sustainable development," used NT$5 million (US$162,114) of the fund she received from the Tang Prize to establish the Gro Brundtland Award to recognize distinguished researchers in her field.
The prize requires that candidates are female, younger than 40 years old, citizens of a developing country or Taiwan, and hold a research doctorate and carry out research related to public health or sustainable development.
The five recipients of the Gro Brundtland Award will also attend an award ceremony on March 17 in Taipei.
