Academia Sinica and the Pacific Science Association (PSA) will jointly host the 23rd Pacific Science Congress (PSC-23) at Academia Sinica from June 13 to 17, 2016. The PSA Congress is held once every four years. During its long history of 96 years this is the first time the Association has held its Congress in Taipei. The theme of the meeting is “Science, Technology and Innovation—Building a Sustainable Future in Asia and the Pacific”. About 600 participants from 30 countries are expected to attend. The Congress is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Council of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan; the Biochemical Technology Education Foundation and Taiwan Marine Biotechnology Society.

The PSC provides an interdisciplinary platform to exchange ideas among scientists focusing on issues particularly important to the Asia Pacific region. This year’s congress program is therefore designed to provide maximal opportunities for scientists to present research findings, assess and prioritize issues for further research, bring together scientists from remote states, catalyze international and cross disciplinary collaboration, and announce and establish new research initiatives. Eight issues will be discussed: “Climate Change and Earth System Sciences”, “Biodiversity and Natural Resources”, “Food/Water/Energy”, “Human Health”, “Human Diversity and Inclusive Development”, “Disaster Risk Reduction”, “Science for Building Green Society”, and “Emerging Technologies”. The session formats are oral presentation, panel discussion and poster sessions.

The PSA was founded by a group of Asia-Pacific scientists who witnessed the immense impact of science and technology on the human society after the World War I. It is a regional non-governmental, scholarly organization that aims to advance science, technology, and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region by actively promoting interdisciplinary and international meetings, research, and collaboration. The first Pacific Science Congress was held in 1920 in Honolulu. Academia Sinica joined the Association in 1928, and now serves as a permanent member.
