The second annual Gro Brundtland Week of Women in Sustainable Development will take place this March 11 – 17. Five young female scientists, Dr. Fathiah Zakham (Yemen), Dr. Farah Fathima (India), Dr. Phyllis Awor (Uganda), Dr. Wafa Al-Jamal (Jordan), and Yi-Chun Yen (Taiwan) will arrive in Taiwan for the week-long event, in which they will take part in discussion with female leaders in the field of public health.
On the list of speakers is Regina Benjamin, former US Surgeon General, who will deliver a talk titled “Making a Difference.” Fumiko Kasuga from Future Earth, Su-May Yu from Academia Sinica, and Kuo-Fong Ma from National Central University will also deliver talks on topics ranging from food production to earthquake disaster management. Inspired to facilitate interaction among women scientists, especially in the fields of public health and sustainable development, Gro Harlem Brundtland designated half of her Tang Prize Grant to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) for the establishment of the event. “The Tang Prize and Gro Harlem Brundtland provide a starting point for these scientists, the seeds, to spread and grow connections within the field of sustainable development,” says Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU.
After the week of symposiums and panels, the event will wrap up in a closing ceremony at the Tang Prize Foundation in Taipei on March 17.
